Prepare an edit pack for DaVinci Resolve
Before the first edit pack
- Open Tools > Settings…, choose Video editor integration and check the base folder for your edit packs: an Editing folder in your Videos folder, unless you choose another. Each edit pack gets its own folder there.
- On the Drives page of Settings, tick Fast enough to edit from for the drives that are fast enough to edit from. Their files are used where they are. A file that is only on a slower drive is copied into your library on one of them, in the same folders your camera cards use, and counts as one of its copies like any other.
- If you convert Insta360 recordings while preparing, set the copies folder on the Edit packs page: converted files go there.
Create and prepare an edit pack
- Open Edit packs from the toolbar and create an edit pack. Choose DaVinci Resolve as its editor, and how its bins should be laid out: by source folder, by date, by camera, by drive, or flat.
- In the library, select the recordings you want, right-click and add them to the edit pack. Their proxies and other companions are added with them.
- Prepare the edit pack. A summary shows what will be copied, how much space it needs and the name each file will get, such as
20260712_093015120_X4_VID_20260712_093015_00_001.insv. Nothing is written until every check passes. - Preparation runs in the Activity panel. When it finishes, the edit pack is ready.
The edit folder
Preparing an edit pack makes its edit folder, for example C:\Users\you\Videos\Editing\Alps 2026. Open this folder in your editor. Its Media folder holds the edit pack’s files under their permanent names; anything else you keep there, such as exports or music, is yours. To use another place, choose it with Change… in the edit pack’s Edit window before you prepare. If the folder already holds a Media folder of your own, Media Organizer leaves it alone and asks you to choose another place.
Avoid a folder that OneDrive or another sync service uploads: it would upload the footage behind the Media folder. Media Organizer warns you before using one. Copying an edit folder to another drive in File Explorer also copies all the footage behind it.
The Media Manager drive
The Media folder leads to the edit pack’s folder on the read-only Media Manager drive, mounted by default on C:\Media Manager. Its files are served from wherever they are, so one edit pack can use recordings from several drives. The names never change, which is why Resolve finds the files again months later. The drive stays mounted after you close Media Organizer; its icon in the notification area can open or unmount it.
In DaVinci Resolve
Media Organizer starts Resolve if it is not running, creates the project and imports the clips from the edit folder into bins. Media that Resolve makes for the project, such as voiceovers, goes into the edit folder too. It fills in each clip's camera, scene, take and recording date (Date Recorded), and a start timecode from the time of day it was recorded, but only where those fields are empty, so what you type in Resolve stays. A clip you moved to another bin is found there and not imported again. Resolve is left open for you, and nothing is ever deleted in it.
If you made the Resolve project yourself, open it in Resolve and click Add to the open DaVinci Resolve project in the Edit packs window: the files go into that project, and later updates go there too. Creating and filling Resolve projects needs DaVinci Resolve Studio.
With the free DaVinci Resolve
The free DaVinci Resolve does not let other programs create or fill its projects, so Media Organizer tells you the steps instead:
- In Resolve, create a project.
- Drag the edit pack’s edit folder from File Explorer into the media pool. Proxies in Proxy folders link by themselves.
- Choose File > Import Metadata To > Media Pool, pick the file ending in
Resolve metadata.csvin the edit folder, untick Match using clip start and end Timecode and click OK. Each clip gets its camera, scene, take and recording date.
The metadata file is written when you prepare the edit pack, and again each time you ask Media Organizer to create or update the Resolve project, so it holds your current tags.
Insta360 X-series recordings can be converted to MP4 while the edit pack is prepared, using Two Left Wheels 360, installed separately. Set this per camera model in Settings › Camera settings.
