Import into DaVinci Resolve
With Edit in set to DaVinci Resolve, the main window offers three buttons:
- Create project in Resolve makes a Resolve project with the editing pack's name, its recordings and their proxies, and a 3840 × 1920 timeline, the shape of 360° pictures, and fills in each clip's camera details. Resolve saves the project that is open first. If Resolve already has a project of that name, the app offers to open it and add the recordings it does not have yet.
- Add to the open Resolve project adds the recordings that the project open in Resolve does not have yet, with their proxies, and fills in the camera details of the editing pack's clips.
- DaVinci Resolve settings… holds the metadata file and Resolve tips.
Both Create and Add need DaVinci Resolve Studio open: only Studio lets other programs add clips. In the free version, click Open folder and drag the MOV files from the editing pack's folder into the Media Pool. Leave the Proxy folder where it is: Resolve finds the proxies in it by itself.
Then, in Resolve
- Under Playback, Proxy Handling, choose Prefer Proxies so Resolve plays the proxies while you edit.
- Each clip's camera details are its camera, the camera's serial number and firmware, and the date recorded. With Create or Add in Resolve Studio they are already filled in. With the free version, choose File, Import Metadata To, Media Pool, select the file that ends in Resolve metadata.csv in the editing pack's folder and click OK with the default matching; clips you add later need the import again.
- Each Insta360 clip shows its start timecode: the camera's own when it recorded one, otherwise the time of day the recording started. Sort the Media Pool by Start TC to put clips in the order they were recorded.
- Edit as usual. For the final render, see Render your final video. Keep Two Left Wheels 360 running until the render has finished.
To leave the camera details and the metadata file out of an editing pack, clear Resolve metadata file in DaVinci Resolve settings…. After you change an editing pack's settings, choose Playback, Delete Render Cache, All in Resolve, or Resolve keeps showing the old picture.
Do not use Generate Optimized Media on these clips. Resolve would read and stitch every full-resolution frame, which takes about as long as an export. The proxies already give smooth playback.
DaVinci Resolve Studio is the edition tested so far. DaVinci Resolve integration explains each of these extras and what differs in the free version. For looking around inside the 360° picture, see Reframe 360° footage.
